Age-Related Macular Disorder
What is Age-Related Macular Disorder?
It is an eye disorder that causes blurring of central vision. This condition occurs when the macula, the eye region responsible for sharp, “straight-ahead vision”, is harmed by aging. The macula is a portion of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue.
AMD is a frequently occurring disorder and the major cause of vision loss in older persons. AMD does not cause total blindness, but central vision loss can make it difficult to recognize faces, drive, read and perform close-up tasks such as repairing and cooking.
What Are The Symptoms Of Age-Related Macular Disorder?
There are no initial sing and symptoms of macular degeneration. Most commonly, this condition is identified when the condition worsens or affects both eyes. The symptoms of AMD include:
- Dim, hazy areas in your vision field.
- Impaired vision: Blurry vision making it difficult to drive or read small text.
- Rarely, diminished or altered color perception
What Causes Age-Related Macular Disorder?
The prevalence of AMD increases with age. It is the leading cause of serious vision loss in persons aged sixty and older.
Scientists believe that your genes play a role in macular degeneration. If a family member has it, your risk may be increased. The risk factors for AMD include:
- Smoking
- High cholesterol levels
- High blood pressure
- Being obese
- Having fair skin
- Being female
- Having light-colored eyes
- consuming an excessive amount of saturated fat
How Is Age-Related Macular Disorder Diagnosed?
In addition to a thorough eye examination and detailed medical history, your eye specialist may also perform the following tests to detect AMD.
Visual acuity examination
This standard vision test assesses vision at various distances.
Pupil dilation
Eyedrops are used to dilate the pupil to enable a careful examination of the retina.
Fluorescent Dye Angiography
This diagnostic technique is used to detect a wet type of AMD by injecting a specific dye into the arm vein. Photographs are taken to help the physician determine if the blood vessels are leaky and whether it is not the major problem as the dye passes through the blood vessels in the retina.
Amsler Grid
This checkerboard-like grid is used to diagnose AMD by determining whether the patient perceives the straight lines as wavy or absent. Both signs may suggest the presence of AMD.
