Alopecia Areata
What is Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder that affects hair follicles and causes hair loss. It usually manifests as distinct bald patches on the scalp, but it can trigger hair loss in any hair-bearing part of the body.
Alopecia is a Latin word that means “hair loss,” and areata refers to the patchiness. Alopecia areata is a broad term for a variety of conditions, including diffuse alopecia areata, ophiasis inversus, alopecia areata Universalis, or totalis.
What Are The Symptoms Of Alopecia Areata?
Possible Alopecia Areata symptoms include:
- Small, oval regions of hair loss on the scalp, on the beard, or other hair-bearing parts of the body.
- Hair loss along with regrowth.
- Significant hair loss in a very short time
- Unilateral baldness(on one side)
- Pitting of fingernails
- Narrow "exclamation point" hairs at the base/next to the scalp
What Causes Alopecia Areata?
In alopecia areata, the immune system attacks hair follicles
by mistake, resulting in inflammation. Researchers believe that both genetic and
environmental (non-genetic) could be responsible for this immunological attack on
hair follicles.
For example, according to the studies, genes that encode the
“natural killer cell receptor D” (NKG2D) have been found to be responsible for
the development of Alopecia Areata. While environmental factors that triggers
alopecia areata include disease, physical injury and emotional stress.
How Is Alopecia Areata Diagnosed?
Doctors can easily identify alopecia areata by evaluating symptoms during examination. Under a microscope, they may assess the extent of hair loss and analyze hairs from affected regions.
After an initial clinical examination, if the physician is unable to make a diagnosis, a skin biopsy may be performed. Other tests to identify this condition include Dermoscopy and Hair Pull test. A physician may also recommend a blood test to rule out other autoimmune disorders.
