Bells Palsy
What is Bells Palsy
Bell’s palsy is a condition characterized by transient weakness or paralysis of the facial muscles. It occurs when the facial nerve that regulates facial muscles becomes swollen or compressed.
The syndrome produces stiffness or facial sagging on one side of the face. On the affected side, you may have difficulty closing your eye or smiling. In the majority of cases, the symptoms of Bell’s palsy usually subside after a few weeks or months.
What Are The Symptoms Of Bells Palsy?
Bell’s palsy symptoms frequently start out unexpectedly and peak
in severity within 48 to 72 hours. Some may experience minor side effects.
Others become completely paralyzed.
Symptoms start to progressively get better, in three weeks. Within
three months, up to 80% of patients totally recover and exhibit no evidence of
Bell’s palsy.
Bell’s palsy symptoms include:
- Facial drooping
- Drooling
- Eating and drinking challenges
- Speaking
- Dry eyes
- Drooling
- Facial or ear pain
- Loss of flavor
- Headache
- Tinnitus
- sound sensitivity.
These symptoms might be moderate or severe and have a tendency to fluctuate.
What Causes Bells Palsy?
No one knows for sure what causes Bell’s palsy. But it is thought to be caused by an inflammatory response by the body’s immune system affecting the nerves that control face movements. Other causes include:
- Hypertension
- Toxins
- Sarcoidosis
- Guillain-Barré syndrome
- Multiple sclerosis
- Myasthenia gravis
- Injury
- Lyme disease
- Infection, particularly after a Herpes simplex virus infection
How Bells Palsy Is Diagnosed?
Most of the time, your doctor can tell if you have Bell’s
palsy by looking at the symptoms. Bell’s palsy can’t be found with a specific
test. However, your doctor may recommend tests to rule out other illnesses that
can manifest similarly to your symptoms and to determine the extent of the
nerve damage. Some of these tests could be:
- Electromyography
- Blood tests
- Computerized tomography
- Magnetic resonance imaging
