Celiac Disease
What is Celiac Disease
Celiac disease, often known as gluten-sensitive enteropathy, is a multisystem digestive condition. Multisystem indicate that multiple organs may be affected. In this condition, when affected individuals consume gluten, the immune system mistakenly fights off the cells of the small intestine. The protein gluten is found in some rye, wheat barley, and other grains.
What Are The Symptoms Of Celiac Disease ?
Celiac disease symptoms include:
- Digestive issues such as pale stools, constipation, diarrhea, pain, and abdominal bloating.
- A skin rash that causes mouth sores and blisters
- Musculoskeletal disorders such as bone, joint pain, or muscle spasms.
- Dental enamel abnormalities.
- Problems with growth and not being able to thrive (in children). This is because they can't get the nutrients into their bodies.
- Anemia
- Tingling in legs caused by low calcium and nerve damage
- Depression
- Hepatitis
What Causes Celiac Disease ?
Celiac disease can be caused by your genes, eating foods with gluten, and other things, but the exact cause is not known. The way babies are fed, GI infections, and the bacteria in the gut could also play a role. Celiac disease can also occur after pregnancy, giving birth, surgery, getting a virus, or being under a lot of emotional stress.
When gluten-containing foods are consumed, the immune system becomes active and damages the villi, the “microscopic hairlike projections” that line the small intestine, Intestinal villi are responsible for absorbing vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients from the food we eat. If your villi are harmed somehow, it doesn’t matter how much you eat; your body just won’t absorb the food.
How Is Celiac Disease Diagnosed?
At first, a complete physical examination is performed if your doctor suspects celiac disease. He/she will also talk to you about your health history. The provider may also check the antibodies level of gluten in the blood. Celiac disease patients have more ‘certain antibodies” in their blood than people without the disease. If you think you have celiac disease, you may need a genetic test done on your blood.
Your doctor may do other tests, like a blood test to check iron levels, and to look for nutritional deficiencies. Celiac disease can decrease iron levels which can lead to anemia.
