Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?
Chronic fatigue also known as Myalgia encephalomyelitis is a chronic illness characterized by a wide variety of symptoms. The most frequently observed symptom is excessive fatigue.
It is a condition that can affect anyone, even children. It is more prevalent in women and typically appears between the mid twenty and mid-forty.
What Are The Symptoms Of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?
The degree of chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms might differ from day to day and from person to person. Possible signs and symptoms include:
- Concentration difficulties
- Memory
- Headaches
- Sore throat
- Lymph nodes in your armpits and neck that are enlarged
- Joint discomfort
- Unexplained muscle pain
- Extreme fatigue after mental or physical exertion
- Drowsiness that worsens when rising from a supine or seated position
- Insomnia
These symptoms might be moderate or severe and have a tendency to fluctuate.
What Causes Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?
Even though researchers have found many biological changes in people with the disease, we still don’t know what causes it. Some people can get the disease because of an infection, exposure to a toxin, anesthesia, immunization, or a traumatic event like a car accident. This condition may come on slowly over months or years in some people.
How Is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Diagnosed?
At the moment, there is not a single test available that can tell if someone has chronic fatigue. Doctors make a diagnosis by ruling out all other diseases that could cause the same symptoms and using standard diagnostic criteria.
Routine medical tests performed by the person do not show any abnormality but more tests may show something is wrong.
Therefore, doctors have made a Diagnostic criterion for ME/CFS based on the clinical criteria of the National Academy of Medicine
For a person to be diagnosed with ME/CFS, they must have three signs:
- Functioning much less well and feeling very tired all the time for at least 6 months. The person isn't able to do as much as they used to before they got sick. Their tiredness isn't caused by a lot of hard work, and resting doesn't help them much.
- Poor sleep
- Post-exertional malaise.
Also, at least one of the following two symptoms must be present for a diagnosis:
- Cognitive problems such as difficulties with understanding, finding words, memory
- They can't stand up straight and have symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, sweating and palpitations when standing that are reduced or disappear when lying down.
It is important to remember that these are not the only symptoms of chronic fatigue, they are just the minimum requirement to meet the diagnostic criteria.
