Dermatitis
What is Dermatitis
Dermatitis is an umbrella word for common skin irritation. It has several causes and manifestations, including rash, and dry or itchy skin. It may also cause the skin to blister, crust, ooze, or peel.
Dermatitis is not contagious but can cause discomfort. Fortunately, regular moisturizing helps reduce the symptoms. Additionally, shampoos, lotions, and medicinal ointments may be administered.
What Are The Symptoms Of Dermatitis?
The sign and symptoms of dermatitis include:
- Itching
- Dry skin
- The appearance of rash on swelling on the skin of different colors. Color depends upon the color of your skin.
- Blisters formation
- Crusty or oozing skin
- Thickened Skin
- Bumps in hair follicles
These symptoms might be moderate or severe and have a tendency to fluctuate.
What Causes Dermatitis?
Dermatitis is caused by different environmental triggers, overactivity of the immune system, or genetics.
1. The immune system
Sometimes, your immune system overreacts to apparently minor irritants or allergens if you have atopic dermatitis. This results in inflammation.
2. Genetics
According to research, if you have a family history of Dermatitis, you are more likely to develop this condition. That is because people with this genetic defect lack a protein called filaggrin responsible for maintaining a healthy skin. The absence of this protein causes dermatitis.
3. Environment
Your environment may also cause the immune system to negatively affect your protective barrier of the skin. This results in increased moisture loss, which can contribute to dermatitis. Other factors that can increase your risk of dermatitis include air pollution and exposure to cigarette smoking.
How Is Dermatitis Diagnosed?
In most cases, medical history and examination may be all that is required to make an accurate diagnosis. However, sometimes, the following tests may be needed:
- Skin scraping to exclude a fungal infection mimicking a dermatitis
- Patch testing to identify contact allergens
- Light testing if a photosensitive dermatitis is suspected
- Skin biopsy
- Blood tests such as IgE testing (usually elevated in atopic dermatitis), and thyroid function (in some hand dermatitis and asteatosis dermatitis).
- Skin swab to rule out bacterial or viral superadded infection
