Dysmenorrhea
What is Dysmenorrhea
Menstrual cramps, also known as dysmenorrhea, are described as severe, cramping pain in the lower abdomen. Many women experience painful cramping in the days before and during their periods.
Some women think the pain is just irritating. For some women, menstrual cramps can be so bad that they make it hard to do normal things for a few days every month.
What Are The Symptoms Of Dysmenorrhea?
The symptoms of dysmenorrhea include:
- Extremely severe throbbing or cramping pain in the lower abdomen.
- Backache that extends to the “lower back” and “thighs”
- Nausea
- Headache
- Vertigo
- Loose stools
What Causes Dysmenorrhea?
Menstrual cramps occur when a substance known as prostaglandin causes the uterus to contract. During your menstrual cycle, the uterus, the muscle organ where a fetus grows, contracts. The uterus contracts more vigorously during menstruation. If the uterus contracts excessively tightly, it might press on adjacent blood arteries, cutting off the oxygen supply to muscular tissue. When a portion of the muscle temporarily loses its supply of oxygen, you experience discomfort.
How Is Dysmenorrhea Diagnosed?
To diagnose dysmenorrhea, your doctor will review your medical history and perform a full pelvic and physical exam. When drugs do not reduce discomfort, an ultrasonography test may be performed. An ob-gyn may propose a laparoscopy in some cases.
This is a procedure that allows an ob-gyn to examine the pelvic organs. Laparoscopy involves making a tiny cut near the belly button. A laparoscope, a narrow, illuminated camera, is placed into the abdomen. Laparoscopy is frequently performed under general anesthesia in a surgical facility or hospital.
