Failed Back Surgery

What is Failed Back Surgery

FBS or failed back syndrome is a misleading term because it is not actually a syndrome. Instead, it is a broad term frequently used to explain the condition of people who underwent spine surgery that did not work and who are still in pain after the surgery.

What Are The Symptoms Of Failed Back Surgery?

The most common symptom of FBS is pain that is dull, and aching in the back and/or legs. Additionally, patients may feel burning, prickling, or stabbing pain in their extremities.

What Causes Failed Back Surgery?

Spine surgery is performed to stabilize a painful joint or to decompress a compressed nerve root. This type of surgery cannot eliminate a patient’s discomfort completely. It can only alter anatomy, therefore an anatomical lesion or an injury that is considered to be the cause of back pain must be detected prior to back surgery before complications develop.

By far the most common reason why back surgeries are ineffective and some patients continue to have pain after surgery is that is because the lesion on which the operation was performed was not the true source of the problem.

How Is Failed Back Surgery Diagnosed?

The doctor will evaluate the patient’s treatment history, focusing on the purpose and nature of any procedures performed. Particular emphasis is devoted to the outcome of the surgery and the evolution of the patient’s symptoms following the operation. Also, a physical examination will be performed. It is possible that the doctor may request a CT scan, MRI, X-rays, or myelogram-CT.
