Glaucoma
What is Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an umbrella term for eye disorders that can cause vision loss or blindness by causing damage to the optic nerve that originates from the back of the eye. There are two major types of glaucoma, “open angle glaucoma” that slowly develop over years. While “Angle closure glaucoma” is caused by any blockage in the drainage system of the eye.
Currently, no permanent cure is available for glaucoma, but early treatment can often prevent vision loss and preserve eyesight.
What Are The Symptoms Of Glaucoma?
Most individuals with open-angle glaucoma have no symptoms. Symptoms typically manifest late in the disease’s progression. This is why glaucoma is sometimes referred to as the “sneak thief of vision.” Most often, the primary symptom is a loss of side or peripheral vision [1].
On the other hand, Angle-closure glaucoma is characterized by more rapid onset and more pronounced symptoms. In this condition, the damage might occur rapidly. If you have any of the following symptoms, get immediate medical attention:
- Vision loss
- Redness around the eyes
- Cloudy eyes particularly in newborns
- Observing halos around light sources
- Eye pain
- Vomiting
- Stomach upset
What Causes Glaucoma?
Scientists do not know what causes glaucoma to occur, but many glaucoma patients have high eye pressure and treatments that reduce eye pressure help to halt the progression of the condition.
There is no way to prevent glaucoma development. But you and your doctor can detect it before it affects your eyesight. Therefore, eye exams are vital.
How Is Glaucoma Diagnosed?
Your eye doctor will inquire about your complete medical history and conduct a thorough examination of your eyes. You may also undergo the following diagnostic procedures for glaucoma:
1. Visual Acuity Examination
The standard eye chart test evaluates your ability to see at varying distances.
2. Pupil Dilation
The pupil is dilated to enable a close examination of the retina and optic nerve using eye drops.
3. Visual Field
This test examines a subject’s peripheral or side vision. A loss of peripheral vision may indicate glaucoma.
4. Tonometry
This routine test measures intraocular fluid pressure.
5. Optic Nerve Imaging Test
The optic nerve is photographed to identify areas of injury.
6. Gonioscopy
During this procedure, a lens is put on the eye to examine the drainage angle. This is where fluid from the eye drains. This test determines whether the drainage is closed or open, as well as whether there has been any damage.
7. Pachymetry
It measures the thickness of the cornea.
