Hemiplegia
What is Hemiplegia
One way to describe hemiplegia is that it is a type of paralysis caused by a trauma that affects only one side of the body, usually just one leg or arm, but sometimes the symptoms also affect the torso.
Hemiplegia, like other types of paralysis, causes the affected area to lose control. People with hemiplegia may have pain that comes and goes and sometimes, may be able to move their limbs better.
What Are The Symptoms Of Hemiplegia?
Hemiplegia is a condition in which only one side of the body loses all or most of its motor function including a sense of touch. But signs and symptoms vary from person to person and depend a lot on how bad each case is.
Usually, both gross motor skills including swimming, running and walking, and fine motor skills such as unbuttoning and buttoning clothes, playing musical instruments, or writing are affected. Less often, people may have trouble speaking, which is often seen as slurred speech. They may also have trouble breathing or swallowing.
What Causes Hemiplegia?
1. Stroke
One of the most frequent causes of hemiparesis is a stroke. Your degree of muscle weakness may vary depending on the size and location of your stroke.
2. Infections
A brain infection may permanently damage the cortex. Although bacteria cause the majority of diseases, some infections can also be caused by viruses or fungi.
3. Brain injury
A sudden blow to the head has the potential to permanently harm the brain. Hemiplegia might arise if the incident just damages one side of your brain. Examples of sudden blow injuries include sports injuries, assaults, and automobile collisions.
4. Genetics
Alternating hemiplegia, a disorder that affects children, can be brought on by an exceptionally rare mutation of the ATP1A3 gene. It results in intermittent, transient hemiplegia symptoms.
In addition to these causes, brain cancer can also cause hemiplegia.
How Is Hemiplegia Diagnosed?
Hemiplegia is often diagnosed by looking at the person’s medical history and giving them a thorough neurological exam that tests their sensory and motor functions.
There are more tests that can be done to find out what cause’s hemiplegia. For example, blood tests, such as a complete blood count, coagulation tests, and an erythrocyte sedimentation rate can help rule out infections or cancers that could be causing the problem.
Imaging, like CT and MRI scans of the head, is needed to rule out most injuries and diseases like head injuries, brain tumors, aneurysms, multiple sclerosis, and stroke. Last but not least, electroencephalography (EEG), which measures the brain’s electrical activity, can be used to diagnose hemiplegia by observing the origin of the seizure.
