Psoriasis
What is Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a skin disorder in which skin cells multiply up to ten times more rapidly than usual. This condition results in the development of rough, scaly, red patches on the skin. These patches can develop anywhere, but typically they arise on the lower back, knees, elbows, and scalp.
Psoriasis cannot be passed from one person to another individual, but occasionally, it may affect members of the same family.
Psoriasis typically manifests itself in early adulthood. In most cases, it only affects a few body regions, but in severe cases, it can cover vast areas of the body. Additionally, the patches have the ability to heal and reappear throughout a person’s life.
What Are The Symptoms Of Psoriasis?
In addition to the presence of skin plaques and skin rashes, you may exhibit the following symptoms:
- Joint discomfort.
- Itching skin
- Dry, cracked skin
- Nails with pitted, damaged, or crumbling surfaces.
These symptoms might be moderate or severe and have a tendency to fluctuate.
What Causes Psoriasis?
Nobody knows what causes psoriasis, but experts believe it’s a combination of factors. Any problem with the immune system trigger inflammation, leading to the rapid development of new skin cells.
Normally, skin cells are formed in ten to thirty days. While in the case of psoriasis they develop in three to four days. When older cells are replaced by new cells, silver scales are formed.
Certain causes can also trigger psoriasis flare-ups. These include:
- Surgery
- Cuts
- Stress
- Infections with Streptococcus bacteria
- Medications such as anti-malarial drugs, lithium, and blood pressure drugs.
How Is Psoriasis Diagnosed?
A general practitioner may frequently diagnose psoriasis based on the skin’s appearance. If your doctor is doubtful about your diagnosis or if your health condition is getting worse day by day, you may be referred to an expert in diagnosing and treating skin disorders (dermatologist).
In rare cases, a laboratory examination will be carried out which includes the investigation of a tiny skin sample, known as a biopsy, under a microscope. Other tests such as liver and function tests, Rheumatoid factor testing, Erythrocyte sedimentation rate testing, uric acid testing, and Complete Blood Count will be performed.
