Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
What is PTSD
It is a mental health illness triggered by either witnessing or experiencing a horrific incident. The most common symptoms include extreme anxiety, nightmares, flashbacks, and uncontrollable thoughts about the traumatic experience.
Most persons who have experienced traumatic situations can recover from their initial difficulties in dealing with and adjusting to time and self-care. But, if your symptoms get worse over time and they get in the way of your normal life, you may have post-traumatic stress disorder.
What Are The Symptoms Of PTSD?
While everyone’s experience with PTSD is unique, there are four major categories of symptoms.
1. Reliving The Traumatic Experience
A person faces the traumatic event recurrently through nightmares, recollections, intrusive recollections, flashbacks, or strong physical or mental reactions.
2. Avoidance And Numbness
This includes avoiding anything that makes you remember the traumatic event, being unable to remember memories of the suffering, a loss of interest in life and related activities, feeling emotionally numb, and having a sense of a limited future.
3. A state of hyperarousal
Symptoms of hyperarousal include sleep problems, hypervigilance, irritation, feeling jumpy or easily startled, and aggressive self-destructive, or risky behavior.
4. Negative Thoughts
A person may feel alienated, and alone, have difficulties in remembering or concertation, hopelessness, betrayal, mistrust, humiliation, and self-blame.
What Causes PTSD?
Any traumatic event might develop PTSD. These include:
- Personal assaults like mugging, robbery, or sexual assault.
- Medical problems
- Road accidents
- Maternity experiences
“Post-traumatic stress disorder” might manifest itself immediately after a stressful event, or it can take weeks, months, or even years.
The reasons why some people develop PTSD while others do not are unclear. About a third of people who have been through a traumatic incident end up developing “post-traumatic stress disorder”.
