Restless Leg Syndrome
What is Restless Leg Syndrome
It is a condition characterized by an involuntary need to move the legs in response to an uncomfortable sensation. Typically, it occurs in the evening or at night when you are lying down or sitting. Moving temporarily alleviates the unpleasant sensation.
What Are The Symptoms Of Restless Leg Syndrome?
The hallmark of RLS is the intense urge to move the involved leg. Additionally, it might induce an unpleasant crawling sensation in the calves, thighs, and feet.
Typically, the discomfort is worse in the night or evening. Some individuals experience the symptoms of restless legs syndrome infrequently, while others experience them daily.
What Causes Restless Leg Syndrome?
RLS often has no identified cause. Researchers suggest that an imbalance of the brain chemical dopamine, which controls muscular action, maybe the cause of the illness.
1. Heredity
Occasionally RLS runs in families, particularly if symptoms appear before age 40. Researchers have identified chromosomal regions where RLS genes may be present.
2. Pregnancy
Hormonal fluctuations or pregnancy may temporarily exacerbate RLS symptoms. Some pregnant women develop RLS for the first time, especially during the third trimester. However, symptoms typically vanish following delivery.
How Is Restless Leg Syndrome Diagnosed?
The five fundamental diagnostic criteria for RLS are:
- An overpowering desire to move your legs, often accompanied by uncomfortable or odd sensations
- A craving that begins or intensifies when at rest.
- A desire that disappears, either partially or completely, when you move.
- A craving that begins or intensifies in the evening
- It is not caused by another condition, such as muscle discomfort, arthritis, or leg cramps.
Your physician may perform laboratory testing to rule out other conditions. A neurological examination can detect blood vessel or nerve damage. A sleep examination known as polysomnography might reveal whether or not you have additional sleep disorders that could be causing RLS.
