What is Sciatica

Pain that runs along the route of the sciatic nerve is referred to as sciatica pain. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back, down each leg, and through the buttocks or hips.

Sciatica develops most frequently when an excessive bone growth or herniated disk puts pressure on a nerve. This results in leg inflammation, discomfort, and frequent numbness.

What Are The Symptoms Of Sciatica?

Symptoms of sciatica can manifest nearly everywhere along the nerve pathway. It is most likely to travel from the low back to the glutes, the rear of the thigh, and the calf.

The discomfort might range from a dull ache to a severe, burning sensation. It can sometimes seem like an electric shock or jolt. It can be exacerbated by sneezing, coughing, or prolonged sitting. Sciatica typically only affects one side of the body.

Some individuals also have tingling, weakness, and numbness in the foot or leg.  For example, one side of the leg may be in discomfort while the other feels numb.

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica is caused when the sciatic nerve is compressed. Typically, an overgrowth of bone or herniated disk in the spine forms on the vertebrae. Less frequently, a tumor might exert pressure on a nerve. Or a disease like diabetes may cause nerve damage. Risk factors for sciatica include age, prolonged sitting, occupation, and obesity.

How Is Sciatica Diagnosed?

If sciatica symptoms are minor and do not last more than 4 to 8 weeks, it is most likely acute sciatica, and medical intervention is typically unnecessary.

A thorough medical history may accelerate the diagnostic process. The individual will also be instructed to practice simple exercises that stretch the sciatic nerve. While executing these movements, a shooting pain lower leg is typically indicative of sciatica.

If symptoms persist for more than four to eight weeks, imaging tests such as an MRI or X-ray may be required to determine what is pinching the sciatic nerve and causing the symptoms.
