What is Scleroderma
Scleroderma often known as systemic sclerosis is a group of uncommon disorders characterized by skin tightening and hardening. This condition may affect the digestive system, blood vessels, and other internal organs.
Frequently, scleroderma is classified as “diffuse” or limited” which relates simply to the extent of skin involvement. Both of these types can cause vascular or organ issues.
Although there is no cure for scleroderma, treatment can alleviate symptoms, halt the disease’s course, and enhance the quality of life.

What Causes Scleroderma?
In most cases, the accumulation and overproduction of collagen in tissues of the body result in scleroderma. Collagen is a fibrous protein that is found in the skin and other connective tissues of the body.
Currently, the actual cause of scleroderma is not known, but doctors believe that the immune system and environment appears to play an important part. Research also indicates that scleroderma is most likely caused by a combination of environmental factors like exposure to silica and other chemicals, genetics such as OX40L gene polymorphism, and immune system dysfunction.
