Sjogren Syndrome
What is Sjogren Syndrome
Sjogren’s syndrome is a disease that affects the body parts that make saliva and tears. It often begins between the ages of 40 and 60 and is much more prevalent in females than in men. It is a chronic condition that can interfere with daily life, but there are therapies available to alleviate the symptoms.
What Are The Symptoms Of Sjogren Syndrome?
The sign and symptoms of Sjogren syndrome include:
- Fatigue
- Dry skin
- Dry mouth
- Dry eyes
- Joint pain
- Vaginal dryness
- Muscle pain
- Swollen salivary glands
- The appearance of rashes after being in the sun
These symptoms might be moderate or severe and have a tendency to fluctuate.
What Causes Sjogren Syndrome?
Sjogren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disorder, in which the immune system attacks the cells and tissues of your own body mistakenly
Scientists aren’t sure what causes Sjogren’s syndrome, but some people with certain genes are more likely to get the disorder. It also looks like there must also be a trigger, like an infection caused by a bacteria or virus.
How Is Sjogren Syndrome Diagnosed?
At first, your doctor may ask for your medical history and check your symptoms to make a diagnosis of Sjogren syndrome. He/she will also recommend different tests. For example, blood tests will be conducted to identify particular antibodies in the blood. These blood tests search for anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA), anti-syndrome Sjogren’s antibodies, and anti-syndrome Sjogren’s type B antibodies.
Your physician may also extract tissue or cells from a salivary gland or the inside of your lip during a biopsy. This biopsy sample is sent to a laboratory for examination of inflammatory markers.
If still a diagnosis is not made, imaging tests such as sialometry will be conducted which monitors saliva production by observing dye injected into salivary glands using X-rays. In salivary scintigraphy, the time it takes for a radioactive isotope to move from a vein injection site to the salivary glands is measured.
If you have a pre-existing autoimmune condition in addition to dry eyes and a dry mouth, your doctor may determine that you have developed secondary Sjogren’s syndrome.
